I stumbled across this post after posting something similar and agree in the need to address the lack of discipleship within churches today. This has been an ongoing conversation for me and friends as we've tried to figure out what this might look like for ourselves and the church as a whole. I would love to here some more of your thoughts on the subject or if you could direct me to resources that you've come across. Grace and Peace, Matt

Nate,
Your critique is fair and you are absolutely right, I should have said "for the Platonist" or for our uses even, "for the neo-Platonist."

And that is really the issue - Plato isn't the problem, even if he were as platonic as his later disciples would be. The issue is how those dualistic (and often anti-material) perspectives of the Platonists have impacted the way we as Christians understand the universe and the writings of Scripture.

More than that, the issue is how we uncritically accept many of these views as Biblical fact.

Bret,

A couple of thoughts:

First, I agree with the usefulness of doubt in the journey of faith. I think your wife's quote is an incredibly good summary of the matter.

Second, I think you slam Plato a little hard here. Your slam is really about Platonism, not Plato (just like Calvin was not as Calvinist as most Calvinists). Plato was trying to conserve a real sense of Universal Realities which transcended and included Particulars (i.e. Justice as a REAL quality shared by just acts; Squareness as a REAL universal shared by all particular squares).

His methodology may be dodgy (and substantially improved by Aristotle!). But his central insight was this: If there are no Real Universals, then everything is subjective.

I think that is a helpful insight that we need to uphold, especially in the face of some of the corrosive errors in postmodern culture...

We want heaven to come to earth so we Say let your Kingdom come your will be done so How is it there. In heaven the anciant of Days rules which is a Blessing but today children rule over Mom and mom over dad which is the curse that comes like in this scripture...Isaiah 3:4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. 5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. This is the scenario we have now worldwide even a curse and a fullfillment of this...Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
Malachi 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. We need the Spirit of Elijah to come to turn Hearts back quickly so to brake the curse of Children Ruling over the Parents.

The Deep calling unto Deep is a Passionate life style a Hunger that can not be quenched. The level of The prophetic Voice is developed by using it 24/7. But what is Coming is the Govermental Manteled Prophets which are the Sons of Thunder which The Lord brings to Power in due season.

I'm looking forward to mine and Amy's move into a new neighborhood. To meet our neighbors and to invest myself into others lives. The shaping and molding that God will do to us and through us is exciting.

Wendy,

I think you're right. There are a lot of pride issues which keep us reserved (and sometimes, on the other side, lead us to perform/impress others). That's a good reminder that it isn't just "outsiders" who experience this struggle to engage, but also those of us who show up week to week.

Rachel,
you're sweet - thanks!
